It’s always worth having a look through previous copies of the VVC Journal as there are plenty of interesting articles to read.
One such article is in Journal 55 from Summer 2013 - reproduced below :
Cambridge Vespa Club 1957
Slightly smudgy photos of ‘fifties scooter rallies are reasonably common (though nonetheless welcome for that), but professional quality ones have always been at a premium.
In 1957 Tony Onyett took these excellent and very evocative shots of Cambridge Vespa Club at what appears to be a VCB rally, and he has kindly given us permission to use them here and retains the copyright. The fine level of detail adds to our knowledge, or serves to remind us of what we had forgotten. The sense of national pride was augmented by a strong identity with the place where you lived, and people genuinely felt that they were representing their town or area. Hence the marker flags and everyone looking their best. You wouldn’t want to be seen to be letting Cambridge down.
Pennants and badges –even transfers – were a potent status symbol of your scooter rally adventures around the country.
This was a time, after all, when travel of any sort was still an adventure. Including riding a brand-new 92L2 up a tree!
